Casita Chamisa... a unique bed and breakfast

Wake to rooster's crowing and bird songs in the green and rural setting of Albuquerque's North Valley. Here the Spanish settlers built their haciendas in the 1600s. Even older are the ruins of Pueblo Indian villages buried in the silt of the flooding Rio Grande. One of these fascinating villages, first occupied over 700 years ago, lies under and around Casita Chamisa, and was excavated by owner Arnold Sargeant’s late wife, archeologist Kit Sargeant.

Archeology site beneath Casita Chamisa
The archeological project was sponsored by the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico, and part of the excavated area remains on view. Arnold is delighted to explain the site to interested visitors and to recount what is known of the "ancient ones" who lived here so long ago.

Casita Chamisa guest roomAccommodations at Casita Chamisa include a two-bedroom guesthouse and a large bedroom in the main house with separate entry. The guesthouse features a cozy fireplace and Southwestern decor, a kitchenette, bath, and plant-filled greenhouse where one can sit and read or write.

The large bedroom in the main house features a Mexican tile floor, viga ceiling, corner fireplace, private bath, and separate entry.

New Mexico is a lovely place to spend your winter. The guesthouse is available for longer term rental during the winter months (December - February). For long term rentals we will discount our regular fee 10%-50% off depending on the length of stay. Please call to inquire.

Patio at Casita Chamisa A country-style continental breakfast is served on a plant-filled, enclosed, glass-covered patio, or, in Winter, in the dining room of the historic adobe main house. Breakfast includes steaming pots of coffee or tea, fresh fruit in season, juice, and features Arnold's justly-famous sourdough bread toasted and served with homemade jams, and honey from the beehives in the orchard. Arnold’s rotating menu also includes such items as coffeecakes or muffins hot from the oven, and sourdough waffles or blue corn pancakes straight off the griddle.

Casita Chamisa indoor pool Guests are invited to swim in the attached indoor heated swimming pool, lounge in the hot tub, or sunbathe outside on the redwood decks. Flower gardens and the orchard are places to wander.

Arnold will help you plan your vacation or free time with visits to the nearby Indian pueblos for fiestas, to mountain and desert areas of breath-taking beauty close to Albuquerque and around New Mexico, archeological sites, and ski areas. Rise early to jog along the tree shaded streets and acequias (irrigation ditches) of the North Valley, or stroll the paths by the river and through the bosque at the Nature Center ten minutes away. Horse back rides can be arranged from a nearby stable. Eat at the excellent Mexican and Continental restaurants located in the Valley, often in delightful old Spanish houses.

Casita Chamisa is a 15-minute drive from the intriguing shops and galleries of Old Town Plaza, the Albuquerque Museum, the Indian Cultural Center, as well as the business center. It is a 20 minute drive from the airport and an hour away from Santa Fe.

Relax from your journey with a refreshing natural therapeutic massage in your room or by the pool. A certified licensed masseuse is available by appointment.
